Structural Engineer
Job descriptions & requirements
Position Overview
MASS is seeking a talented Structural Engineer to join our Africa Studio for an initial 12-month period in support of the Beginnings Fund—a multi-year, multi-country program focused on improving maternal and newborn health facilities across Malawi, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. The program focuses on delivering healthcare infrastructure in often remote and resource-constrained settings, including both the adaptation of existing facilities and the design of new buildings and extensions.
The ideal candidate will be capable of operating across all design stages, collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team, and developing practical, context-responsive structural solutions that balance durability, constructability, cost, and sustainability.
Position Summary
The selected candidate will undertake technical design and analysis tasks with minimal support, including structural concept development, design calculations, and the production of drawings and reports that clearly communicate design intent. The role requires strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, resilient infrastructure.
The role may evolve to include in-country support during construction phases; candidates from one of the listed countries with strong knowledge of local construction practices and regulatory environments will have a significant advantage.
Project-Specific Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Revit models and as-built drawings
- Lead production of engineering design drawings across all project stages
- Provide guidance on local code and regulatory requirements as well as local cultures/customs.
- Provide guidance on common construction and detailing practices as well as material availability, use, and processing/workmanship.
- Provide guidance on local construction costs and contracting procedures.
- Support the design team in communications and collaboration with local partners and stakeholders, including language translation (as needed).
- Partake in trainings and learn principles of Maternal Newborn Healthcare design, human-centered design, sustainability, and resiliency, etc.
- Collaborate with the project team on the review, revision, development, and improvement of Ministry of Health infrastructure design standards and guidelines.
- Undertake site visits, including regular travel to project locations and occasional other international travel
- Provide on-site quality oversight and construction supervision as required
Desired Skills/Experience
- 3–7 years of professional experience in structural engineering
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering
- Strong ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams while maintaining individual initiative and accountability
- Proven experience in structural analysis and translating concepts into buildable design solutions
- Ability to contribute across all project phases, from concept design through to construction documentation and delivery
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Excel
- Strong command of Revit as a primary production tool
- Working knowledge of structural analysis software such as ETABS, GSA or other.
- Experience with BIM 360 or equivalent digital coordination platforms
